9 Reasons for Converting Your Desktop Application to Cloud-Based Application

How does your day begin at the office? Does it start with a cup of aromatic coffee while your computer is loading? And what happens then? Let us guess. You run the desktop application and go for the next cup of coffee. In the case of a new update requirement, you may go for lunch because it will take an hour at least to download and update necessary for work software. Is it okay for you? One fundamental difference between desktop and web apps is that desktop apps are designed to be used by a single user at a time while web apps are designed to be used by many users at a time.

To create a web version of an existing desktop app, there are several things to consider. You cannot just rename your project desktop apps to web apps because they are different project types. Since you cannot change the name of the project, you will need to create a new one – web application. Converting a desktop application to a web application has several challenges, from the basic UI changes to many others that are more complex:
– Access to hardware
– Management of the application state
– Access to the file system
– Access control
– Use of desktop-specific UI/UX/controls
It is possible to convert desktop applications with an automated tool that can convert both the UI and the code of the application such as Converting WinForms => Web Forms using CodeDom, WebMAP2 for example.
Automated migration tools won’t do everything for you, in most cases, you will have to perform a particular amount of manual work to get the application working in the same way as the original one.
These tools will provide a solution that will be faster than writing the web application from scratch. However, there will be some differences from an application that was designed for the Web, because the architectures are different and usually the way of writing the code for a desktop application assumes things that cannot be assumed for a web one.
